The Atmosphere of Memory
The Atmosphere of Memory had its opening night on October 30, with a selection of great reviews for John.

The New York Times says: "Mr. Glover's role as the self-styled deus ex machina, Murray, who is more like Lucifer ex machina, is undeniably meaty in its exuberant nastiness... Ms. Burstyn and in particular Mr. Glover are naturally arresting stage presences..." Variety comments: "Preening himself in garish outfits supplied by clever costumer Emily Rebholz, Glover gleefully revels in the boorish behavior of this rude trickster." The Associated Press: "Ellen Burstyn and John Glover... bring a wealth of credibility to the roles of Jon's mother and father... Tony-winner John Glover ("Love! Valour! Compassion!") [is] deliciously evil in the role John's villainous father, whose vulgarity is surpassed only by his cruelty." Theatermania: "[T]he extraordinary performances of Ellen Burstyn and John Glover make the play a worthwhile theatrical experience... the superlative work of Burstyn and Glover will linger in one's memory." The Philadelphia Inquirer: "John Glover (Tony and Obie winner) as Jon's father, struts and swaggers with exasperating sexy/slimy charm." And New Jersey Newsroom: "Perfectly cast as the scruffy reprobate of a dad, a jaunty John Glover lounges around being wonderfully scornful of the entire proceedings."

We have an additional production still from the play, courtesy the New York Times:

As Smallville approaches its series finale, John's castmate Cassidy Freeman (Tess) has been talking to IGN about working with Mr. Glover: "Oh, I call him G Love and the Special Sauce. John Glover is incredible. I could not have asked for a cooler guy to play my dad and also to learn from. You work with the same people over and over again. Not that Erica and Tom and Justin aren't incredible – they really are. But you throw someone like that in, who has such history and so much experience working in film, television and theater and you just want to sit next to him and talk the whole time. He's super playful and really giving and a joy. He's such a joy."

Did you hear what Mike Nichols said? He said two of the best moments he'd ever seen on stage and screen were Elizabeth's — when she took the cigar out of George C. Scott's hand in Uncle Vanya and when she hugs the refrigerator when Dustin Hoffman tells her he's going to get married in 'The Graduate.'" Photo from Theatermania:
